When Paul returns to Alabama, it’s to WEUP in Huntsville, working as news director for Leroy Garrett, the first African American to own a radio station in Alabama. Rosedale High School had a practice of readmitting returning servicemen to complete their studies.īy 1958, Paul left Birmingham again, this time seeking out a degree in broadcasting in Chicago, as remembered by his nephew and namesake Paul McGinest, now residing in San Diego. Returning to the states in 1957, he decides to finish his 9 th grade studies at Rosedale High School where he becomes active in the student body at age 20 and indicates his interest in radio broadcasting. In 1954, he travels to Milwaukee, enlists and serves three years in Germany. Paul takes up boxing as a sport and reaches his 6’5” height in time to have his sister enlist him early in the army. Minnie was a traveling evangelist and from the age of four to the age of 13, Paul was a child preacher traveling with his mother, preaching in the AOH churches of Louisiana, Virginia, West Virginia and Arkansas, returning to Birmingham and the Mason City AOH church in 1947. Soon, Tony showed signs of cardiac disease and was provided with a pacemaker. With her unfailing care and love, he recovered a little, being able to smile, laugh, and say a few words. At that time, Sunshine became his primary 24X7 caregiver, helping him eat with a feeding tube to assisting him on all day-to-day functions. The hemorrhage left him paralyzed completely, unable to walk, speak or eat. Tony's health started failing since January 2018 when he suffered from a series of mini-strokes, followed by a severe cerebral hemorrhage. They later also became proud grandparents to five granddaughters and one grandson. The couple became parents to three children - daughter Kelli, sons Jason and Julian. In 2019, she tweeted a romantic collage of the happy couple through the decades while sharing about their 23rd anniversary. They got married on June 15, 1996, when Tony was 51-year-old. It can be presumed that the duo bonded over work and fell in love.
